It’s A Small World

With National Nursing Home Week quickly approaching, I’ve been getting my groups ready to travel the globe through music. I had seen a few activity ideas about matching country to styles of that country and loved the idea but knew that it would be a little far fetched for most of the groups we hold here. However, there are a lot of songs about different countries or foreign cities. I enlisted the help of one of our “jukebox” residents to help me compile a list of well-known songs from, about or in the language of different countries. He actually came up with far more countries that I even anticipated, but for consistancy’s sake, we are keeping it to the following list. For visual prompts, I have printed out photos of the flags of each country and will give them an either/or pair of places to choose from when a song is played.

I felt it would be beneficial for our group if there were fewer countries and more songs from each as opposed to one song per country. I think it will keep the countries, their flags, and the songs more familiar, but then again I haven’t actually done this group yet so I could be completely wrong!

If you are working with a higher functioning group (and a kind of large group) you could also split the room into teams giving each a flag. When a song is played, each team has to decide if the song is from or about their country and raise their flag to indicate their vote.

Any way you choose to put it together, I hope some of this list proves helpful to you!
