Over New Years, I had a bit of trouble coming up with session ideas. I reached out to the fabulous music therapy community who had some tremendous song ideas that really helped me in my planning and I wanted to share some of those with you!
- New York, New York
- Auld Lang Syne
- What are You Doing New Years Eve
- Let’s Bring in a Brand New Year
- Let’s Start the New Year Right
- Happy New Year (abba)
- New Year Resolutions
- Rock Around the Clock
One MT had the great idea of a “Hello and Goodbye” theme session. I absolutely loved this approach and had a great time implementing it. During the rehab group, we talked about some things we want to say “Hello” to (better eating, positivity, etc.) and other things we want to say “Goodbye” to (bad habits, negativity, etc.).
- Hello dolly
- Bye Bye Blackbird
- Bye Bye Blues
- You say Goodbye, I Say Hello
One of my favorite interventions for this time of year is resolution drumming around the clock. In this we identify as a group four New Years resolutions. Those resolutions are assigned a beat that match the syllables as well as a position on the clock. Eg. “Get more sleep” at 12 o’clock “Be Kind” at 3 o’clock, etc. I usually use paddle drums but it could easily be adapted for other instruments or no instruments at all. This exercise is challenging cognitively as well as physically.
Hope you all have had a wonderful New Years, are still keeping up with your resolutions, and found this song list as helpful as I did!
